Soon to be adapted into film, Tony Birch’s The White Girl takes readers back to the 1960’s in in Australia to a fictional town called Deane where the Aboriginal Welfare Act is in full force. Shortlisted for the Miles Franklin award and Winner of the NSW Premier’s Literary Award comes the story of Odette Brown, an Indigenous woman living on a reserve that is under constant watch by the authorities. When newly appointed Sergeant Lowe arrives in town, the custody of Odette’s fair skinned granddaughter, Sissy becomes under threat. Still grappling with the disappearance of her own daughter, Odette must stop at nothing to protect Sissy and their freedom. The White Girl is an immersive and historical account of a painful period in Australia’s history told from the perspective of a courageous Aboriginal woman who defies injustice.
